This category well serves professors and researchers who have qualifications above the norm for their field of endeavor. These may be persons who cannot yet meet the extraordinary ability level, but who are professors or researchers and have had three years of teaching or research experience. In order to qualify, one must have a job offer from a qualified U.S. college, university, or private or public research institution or business. No labor certification is required. Outstanding professors and researchers are those who have received awards for their work, published extensively in their field, or who have received significant recognition for their work.
In some circumstances, the three-year experience requirement can be satisfied while the alien is in graduate school. In one case we were able to qualify a Ph.D. student who was about to take his first regular faculty position at a university in the state of New York. In another case a professor of music was classified as an outstanding professor in a similar situation. We have also obtained outstanding professor or researcher status for experts in the field of supply chain management, business, engineering, and the sciences.
If an alien or his or her employer is interested in obtaining more information about the requirements for this category, please see "How can I find out if I have a good case?" For further information, you may contact our office to obtain information about initial consultations.
For information on what happens after you have obtained outstanding professor or researcher status, please visit our section entitled "Consular Processing and Adjustment of Status."
